On September 20, 2024, Grand Canyon National Park became the stage for a profoundly symbolic event: the naturalization of 30 new American citizens from 11 countries. This ceremony, held at the Mather Amphitheater, marked the return of naturalization ceremonies to this iconic location after a five-year hiatus.

The ceremony began with words from Superintendent Ed Keable, who expressed his excitement to welcome the new citizens in such a spectacular setting. «As you pledge your loyalty in this landscape that reflects the opportunities of our nation, remember that the Grand Canyon is a symbol of America’s promise,» Keable remarked, setting the tone for a meaningful day.
The event continued with a blessing from James Uqualla, a spiritual leader of the Havasupai, who emphasized the importance of connection to the land and respect for its cultures. This gesture of unity underscored the value of diversity and the cultural richness each new citizen brings.
Judge Camille D. Bibles presided over the ceremony, with Court Officer Christina Davison administering the Oath of Allegiance. This moment marked a milestone in the lives of the 30 new citizens who, by pledging loyalty to the United States, began a new chapter in their lives.
The new citizens, hailing from Brazil, Canada, India, Mexico, New Zealand, The Philippines, Turkey, Ukraine, Venezuela, and Vietnam, shared the joy of becoming part of a nation that values freedom and diversity. To make the event even more special, the A-Train Sound band delivered a musical performance that enlivened the ceremony.
This event was part of the annual Constitution Day and Citizenship Day celebrations, a reminder of democratic principles and the importance of citizenship in building a stronger, united nation. Additionally, the ceremony included a presentation of the colors by the Northern Arizona University ROTC Honor Guard and a rendition of the national anthem, contributing to the occasion’s solemnity.
This ceremony not only celebrated the participants’ new U.S. citizenship, but also the promise of a future filled with hope and their contribution to a nation continuously enriched by their diversity.
